Various regions in Europe are subject to intensive urbanization and open suburban spaces (PUOS) are decreasing due to huge investments on the outskirts of cities or in functional areas of urban areas. RENATUR therefore aims to preserve these areas as a natural heritage and to further develop policy instruments for nature protection in the vicinity of urban areas.

The project started in August 2019 and is implemented as part of the Interreg Europe program 2014-2020, with six involved partners: from Belgium (Flanders - Flemish Land Agency), Germany (Ministry of Regional Development and Transport of Saxony - Anhalt, University of Martin Luther in Halle and Wittenberg), Poland (Mazovia - Mazovia Development Agency SA), Slovenia (BSC Kranj Business Support Center), Spain (University of the Basque Country) and Hungary (Hajdú-Bihar Government). The project coordinator is the Martin Luther University in Halle and Wittenberg. For four years, the project will be financed from the European Regional Development Fund, at the level of EUR 1.27 million.
